Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the writer, drew all his life. As a student in Leipzig, he attended Adam Friedrich Oeser's classes at the art academy. In 1774, he received tuition from Johann Andreas Benjamin Nothnagel, almost certainly in Frankfurt. He then made several attempts at portraits, mainly profiles, but often silhouettes.
