John Herbert studied at the Royal Academy in London. He was a corresponding member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the New York National Academy Museum and School of Art. He started his career by producing illustrations and a few portraits but, after his conversion to Catholicism, he devoted himself entirely to religious painting.
