Frank Kupka began his studies at the school of fine art in Prague in the sacred and historical painting section, and continued his studies from 1892 at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, where he was a strong contender for the Prix de Rome but did not win it, arguably because he was Czech.
