Painter, engraver. Genre scenes, village scenes, interiors with figures, landscapes, winter landscapes, portraits.

Jan Miense Molenaer studied with Frans Hals, as did his wife Judith Leyster, whom he married on 1 July 1636 in Haarlem. Molenaer settled in Amsterdam the same year and remained there until 1648, when he bought a house in Heemstede near Haarlem. In 1657 he returned to Haarlem. His life can be divided into two periods, before and after his stay in Amsterdam.
