Born 12 December 1682, in Pietrarossa, near Venice; died 28 April 1754, in Venice.

Painter, engraver, draughtsman. Religious subjects, portraits, genre scenes.

Venetian School.

Piazzetta was initially a wood-carver, like his father Giacomo. He quickly turned to painting and trained in the studio of Antonio Molinari, and with G.M. Crespi in Bologna. The latter's influence is evident in Piazzetta's early paintings, characterised by their striking - almost Caravaggesque - use of chiaroscuro....
