Pointelin's parents were winegrowers in Arbois. He was a student of the painter Victor Maire but chose to become a mathematics teacher. He retired to Mont-sous-Vaudrey in the Jura in 1897 and painted there until his death. He made his debut in Paris at the 1866 Salon, becoming a member in 1882 of the Salon des Artistes Français. He won medals between 1878 and 1900. He became a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1886 and Officer in 1903....
