Born 14 April 1724, in Paris; died 14 February 1780, in Paris.

Painter (gouache), watercolourist, engraver, draughtsman, illustrator. History painting, portraits, genre scenes, landscapes.

Gabriel de Saint-Aubin drew firstly at Sarrasin's studio and then at the Académie Royale under Jeaurat, Colin de Vermont and Boucher. In 1750 he won second prize in the Prix de Rome competition. In 1752 he was not placed, and the competition was won by Fragonard, ahead of Monnet. Monnet won the following year and Saint-Aubin was again placed only second. In 1754 he failed again and did not try again, devoting himself in future to drawing....
