Alfred Sisley's father, William Sisley, and his mother, Felicia Sell, were both English, and he retained British nationality throughout his life even though he spent little time in his country of origin. His father was a haberdashery import-export agent established in France who enjoyed a comfortable level of affluence and paid for his three children to have an excellent middle-class education. When Sisley was 18, his father directed him initially towards a career in commerce and sent him to London to improve his knowledge of English and begin to learn how to manage business affairs....
