Born 25 September 1875, in El Ferrol (Galicia); died 17 March 1960, in Madrid.

Painter. Religious subjects, mythological subjects, portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, landscapes with figures.

Fernando de Sotomayor y Zaragoza was initially a pupil of Manuel Domínguez in Madrid; later he went to perfect his technique in Rome. He visited Amsterdam and The Hague, and then settled in Santiago (Chile), where he was director of the school of fine art, from 1911. He returned to Spain in 1915, to work at the court of Alfonso XIII. In 1922, he was made director of the Prado Museum in Madrid and a member of the Escuela de Bellas Artes. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of Alfonso X, of Isabella the Catholic and of Alfonso XII and also the Gran Croce d'Italia. He was made Commandant of the Légion d'Honneur and of the Order of Merit of Chile....
