Edward Steichen immigrated to the United States in 1881 and grew up in Hancock, Michigan, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. With no further formal education after the age of 15, he developed an interest in drawing and painting. He was an apprentice for four years at a lithography company in Milwaukee and then worked for the firm for two years, rising to the rank of designer. During this time, he taught himself photography.
