Thomas Sully was born into a family of actors and moved with them to America in 1789. He studied painting in Charleston and moved to Richmond in 1813, where he was a portrait painter. Back in Europe he studied under Benjamin West and Sir Thomas Lawrence. When he returned to America in 1838, he settled in Philadelphia. He painted many portraits of famous people, notably ...
