Jean Tinguely was taught painting from 1940 to 1944 by Julia Ris at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel. In 1951, he married Éva Aeppli. Between completing his training and settling in Paris in 1953, he earned a living by doing odd jobs such as decorating shop windows. In 1953, he worked with Daniel Spoerri in Jean Lurçat’s studio.
