Jiri Trnka worked with the painter and puppet-maker Josef Skupa before going on to study at the Prague school of fine arts. He began his artistic career painting pictures and illustrating books; indeed, he made a considerable contribution to the graphic arts. But the pull of puppets and the cinema was too great for him to resist, and during World War II he founded his own theatre, which he called Trnka's Wooden Theatre. In ...
