Karel van Vogelaer studied in his native town of Maastricht and later worked in Rome, Lyons and Paris. On his return to Rome, he became a member of the guild of Dutch painters - the Bent - and was often employed by Carlo Maratti. Vogelaer had several nicknames, which alluded to his speciality of painting flowers, but records also include a somewhat strange reference to Mars, which may have been the pseudonym of his brother....
