Painter, engraver (etching). History painting, portraits, genre scenes.

David Wilkie was the son of a Protestant minister by the same name. He was sent to Edinburgh at the age of 14 to study at the Trustees Academy. He returned to his native Fife in 1804 and worked independently, producing modest portraits and genre compositions. He then moved to London in May 1805 and enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools....
