Simon Starling graduated from Trent Polytechnic (now Nottingham Trent University) in 1990. He then went on to study at the Glasgow School of Art from 1990-1992. Starling questions the idea of Modernity by emphasising the importance of historical continuity. He creates his work by placing a known object or concept usually taken for granted, such as a bicycle or a chair, in a new or unfamiliar context. He invites the spectator to create interconnections between the object, its history and its cultural significance. His aim is not to remove an object from its historical context but rather to explore its history....
