(b Copenhagen, Feb 7, 1836; d Nov 8, 1908).

Danish collector and industrialist. The owner of a tobacco factory, he bought his first work of art in 1866, and his collection of 19th-century Danish art grew rapidly thereafter. With his interest in contemporary art Hirschsprung created a collection that was unique in its time. The artists include P. S. Krøyer and others of the naturalistic painters working at Skagen, Theodor Philipsen, Kristian Zahrtmann, Laurits Andersen Ring, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Joakim Skovgaard and other Danish Symbolists, and the Fynboerne (Fyn painters). At the same time he assembled a comprehensive collection of art from the Golden Age in Denmark, with masterpieces by C. W. Eckersberg, C. A. Jensen, Christen Købke, Wilhelm Marstrand, Johan Thomas Lundbye, P. C. Skovgaard, Dankvart Dreyer, Christen Dalsgaard and Hans Ludvig Smidth among others.
