He studied at the Ecole César Franck (1946–8) and at the Paris Conservatoire (1948–53) with Milhaud and Rivier (composition), Dandelot (harmony) and Koechlin (counterpoint and fugue). In 1962 he formed the Orchestre de Chambre de Musique Contemporaine which became the Ensemble Moderne de Paris in 1968.
