American musical theater dancer, singer, and actress. Trained at the School of American Ballet in New York City, she began dancing in Broadway shows in 1952. Her first leading role was in Mr. Wonderful (1956), with Sammy Davis Jr., and her next, as the fiery Anita in West Side Story (1957; music by Leonard Bernstein, choreography by Jerome Robbins), made her a star.
