(b Washington, DC, Jan 23, 1933). American musical theater dancer, singer, and actress. Trained at the School of American Ballet in New York City, she began dancing in Broadway shows in 1952. Her first leading role was in Mr. Wonderful (1956), with Sammy Davis Jr., and her next, as the fiery Anita in West Side Story (1957; music by Leonard Bernstein, choreography by Jerome Robbins), made her a star. This was followed by leading roles in Bye Bye Birdie (1960; music by Charles Strouse, choreography by Gower Champion), Bajour (1964; music by Walter Marks, choreography by Peter Gennaro), and Chicago (1975; music by John Kander and Fred Ebb, choreography by Bob Fosse), in which she played Velma Kelly opposite Gwen Verdon’s Roxie Hart.
