(b St. Louis, Jan 19, 1939; d Bloomington, IN, Dec 28, 1977). American electric guitarist. His father was a classical singer and multi-instrumentalist. He studied classical guitar before achieving prominence as a jazz session musician during the late 1960s and early 1970s. After touring with Astrud Gilberto (1965, including his first concerts in Japan) and Ella Fitzgerald (1965–6) he performed and recorded with Charlie Haden, Gary Burton, Keith Jarrett, and Ron Carter (1969, 1973); he also recorded with James Moody (1969), the Thad Jones–Mel Lewis Orchestra (1969), Richard Davis (c1971), Paul Motian (1972, 1974), and Mark Murphy (1972–3) and appeared as a freelance with such musicians as Stan Getz, Hubert Laws, Jimmy Owens, Joe Farrell, and Herbie Mann (1974).
