(b Kraków, Poland, June 6, 1946; d Munich, Feb 15, 1979). Polish violinist and alto saxophonist. He studied violin from the age of six and alto saxophone while in his teens. From 1965 to 1969 he led a quartet (which included Jan Jarczyk and Janusz Stefański) in which he played saxophone in a style modeled after that of John Coltrane; in its last year the quartet gave performances to some acclaim at the Polish festivals Jazz on the Odra and Jazz Jamboree, as well as at a festival in Hungary. Seifert again took up violin while playing free jazz with Tomasz Stańko’s quintet (1968–73); by 1971 he had ceased playing saxophone. That year he was a guest soloist with Boško Petrovic at the festival in Ljubljana, and in 1972 he recorded with Barre Phillips and Jiří Stivín in Czechoslovakia.
