(b Abilene, TX, Aug 15, 1954). Trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, and leader. His mother was the pianist in his church (in Mercedes, Texas, near the Mexican border), and all his siblings played music. He learned piano briefly from the age of six, took up trumpet around the age of 12, and as a teenager performed at church in a duo with his sister on piano. Later he attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Ohio State University, and Arkansas State University (BS French), during which time he learned to play various other instruments, including bass, trombone, and alto saxophone. In 1977 he moved to Dallas, where, with Art Lande, he formed the Dallas Association for Avant-Garde and Neo-Impressionistic Music (DAAGNIM), through which they aimed to promote local musicians and issue recordings on its record label.
