(Laurent Jules Désiré)

(b Boulbon, Bouches du Rhône, Dec 6, 1927). French composer. He studied at the Ecole César Franck and at the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Charles Koechlin, Milhaud and Rivier. A prolific composer, he has composed five operas, and many orchestral and chamber works; he has drawn on a wide range of tonal precedents, and also on ideas from science fiction. La nuit foudroyée is the story of a diurnal man and a nocturnal woman who disintegrates in his arms at the coming of dawn, and Ana et l’albatros is based on a Celtic legend telling how sea-captains are transformed into albatrosses. 1-330 is set in the 30th century in a world inhabited by computers.
