Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) is a collection of technologies that offer short- or long-term ventricular assistance for patients with heart failure. Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are available to support the left ventricle (LVAD), right ventricle (RVAD), or both (BiVAD). In reality, LVADs account for the vast majority of long-term VADs. This chapter describes the current short and long term devices available and their indications, including bridge to transplantation and destination therapy.
