Over the last several decades, considerable progress has been made in understanding some aspects of executive function. For example, as reviewed elsewhere in this volume, the mechanisms underlying selective attention, working memory, and inhibitory control are increasingly well understood (Barbas, Chapter 3; Wang, Chapter 15; Koechlin, Chapter 18). We are getting better at explaining the brain basis of how complex behavior is carried out, but understanding the mechanisms by which one behavior is chosen over another remains a substantial challenge.
