Quick Reference

(1885–1965), British Labour Party politician who succeeded Churchill as First Lord of the Admiralty in May 1940, a post he held throughout the war. In June 1940 he flew to Bordeaux with the First Sea Lord, AdmiralPound, to persuade the Vichy French government to put the French navy beyond Hitler's grasp. The failure of this mission led directly to the bombardment of the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir.
