Pittsburghborn author of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974, Pulitzer Prize), a sensitive view of the natural surroundings in which she lives. She has also written Tickets for a Prayer Wheel (1974), poetry; Holy the Firm (1977); and Teaching a Stone To Talk (1982), further essays on nature. Living by Fiction (1983) collects essays on contemporary literature. She also wrote a little book, Encounters with Chinese Writers (1984).
