OT Patriarch. The son of Isaac, he deprived his brother Esau of his birthright by an elaborate ruse and fled to Haran in Mesopotamia. On his way back to Canaan he wrestled with a mysterious Divine stranger and received the name of ‘Israel’. The twelve tribes of Israel took their names from those of his sons.
