A law concerning the polarization of light stating that the intensity of light passing through an analyser and polarizer is proportional to cos2θ, where θ is the angle through which the analyser has been rotated with respect to the polarizer. The law was discovered by the French scientist Étienne Louis Malus (1775–1812) in 1809.
