*Montrose's brilliant Scottish campaign, which had begun in August 1644, received its first check at Philiphaugh, near Selkirk, when he left the Highlands. Weakened by desertions, his troops were surprised on 13 September 1645 and outnumbered by Leslie. Though most of the cavalry escaped, the survivors of the Irish infantry surrendered, only to be massacred in cold blood.
