Amer. composer. First stage prod. in NY was See America First, 1916. First big success was Wake Up and Dream, London 1929. There followed a long series of Broadway musicals and films, e.g. Gay Divorce (1932, filmed as The Gay Divorcée, 1934), Anything Goes (1934), DuBarry Was a Lady (1939), Panama Hattie (1940), Kiss Me, Kate (1948). His individual songs, marked by witty words, incl. Begin the Beguine, Let's Do It, Night and Day, Don't Fence Me In, Miss Otis Regrets, You're the Top, I get a kick out of you, and many others equally good and cherished.
