A former kingdom consisting of unicellular or simple multicellular organisms that possess nuclei and cannot be classified as animals, plants, or fungi. Molecular studies have prompted major revisions to the phylogeny of eukaryotic organisms, and the term ‘protoctist’ is no longer considered either descriptively useful or taxonomically valid.
