Quick Reference

(1629–77), English gardener who worked for the Duchess of Somerset at Essex House (London) and in 1666 became André Mollet's successor as keeper of the royal garden in St James's Park (see London parks and gardens). Rose is said subsequently to have been sent to Versailles to meet André Le Nôtre. Rose possibly helped to lay out Lord Capel's famous garden at Cassiobury. Stephen Switzer in Ichnographia Rustica (1718) described Rose as being ‘esteemed to be the best in his profession in those days’. Rose's name appears as author on the title page of the book The English Vineyard Vindicated (1666) which was, in fact, although based on Rose's material, actually composed by John Evelyn, who signs the preface under the pseudonym Philocepos. In a famous painting Rose is depicted on bended knee presenting a pineapple to Charles II.
