Quick Reference

According to Sāṃkhya-Yoga ontology, one of the three gunas, or strands, of material nature (prakṛti), sattva is characterized as ‘pure’; concomitantly, it represents the principle of pure thought. Since the tripartite guṇa division is extended to various other categories, sattva is also, for instance, used to characterize a group of (sāttvika) mahāpurāṇas belonging to Viṣṇu, and certain ‘cool’ (i.e. pure and thought-clarifying) foods.
