Quick Reference
Integral membrane proteins of synaptic vesicles that bind SNAPs and interact with target-SNARE (syntaxin) in the process of exocytosis. Two isoforms, VAMP-1 (118 aa) and VAMP-2 (116 aa) are known. VAMP-3 is cellubrevin. VAMP-5 (myobrevin, 102 aa) is found in muscle. VAMP-8 (endobrevin, 100 aa) is associated with secretory vesicles in other tissues. A synaptobrevin-like protein (220 aa) is encoded by a gene on the X chromosome and may be subject to complex silencing by histone methylation and acetylation.
