(1885–1971), British naval officer who, as second-in-command of Cunningham's Mediterranean Fleet, fought in early skirmishes with the Italian Navy. In October 1940 he was appointed C-in-C Home Fleet whose warships sank the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941 and guarded the Arctic convoys. He was promoted admiral in 1942, became C-in-C the Nore, one of the navy's five home commands, and in May 1943 was promoted admiral of the fleet. He was knighted in 1941.
