Quick Reference

A component or subdivision of a course or programme of study, which may be taught or assessed as a discrete section of the whole. The term was also used in a very specific sense from 1993 to describe the component parts of a General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ), which were separately assessed and could be accumulated over time in order to gain the full GNVQ award. In the process of tailoring the design of the GNVQ and the modular Advanced Level (A level) to become more compatible for the implementation of Curriculum 2000, the term ‘unit’ was gradually dropped in favour of ‘module’, so that the Vocational A level, which succeeded the GNVQ, was subdivided into modules rather than units. The term is still in use in the wider context of educational and training programmes, however, as in the phrases ‘unit of study’ and ‘unit of assessment’.
