The atomic structure of a symmetric 24°[001] tilt grain boundary in MgO has been derived directly from high-resolution Z-contrast images obtained in a scanning transmission electron microscope. The images indicate the presence of impurities (Z>12) and vacancies at the boundary. High spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy has been used to determine that the segregated impurity is Ca. The specific sites occupied by Ca are obtained from the image and bond valence sum analysis.
