The idea of digging for traces of history in unconventional places was well established in 1985. This chapter suggests that the paradigmatic expression of the German memory landscape is now a topography of traces. This transformation resulted in new ways of perceiving historical monuments, which were now not simply accretions of monuments, ruins, and reconstructions, but landscapes whose historical meanings were richer and more differentiated than previously thought.
