This chapter discusses Diana Thater’s video installation Electric Mind (1996). The installation not only refers to earlier incarnations of the story or idea in other media, but staggers and fragments them in their ensemble. First, there is the ready-made Pat Murphy short story “Rachel in Love,” on which Thater bases her screenplay for Electric Mind. The screenplay is a classic adaptation that adheres to the story’s happy-ending containment of its volatile premise. But in the video portion or installation, she takes it away. Thater also describes her work as an attack upon the guilty assumption of a unifying narrative perspective.
